Chapman’s News & Ideas Happy Non-Gestating Parents’ Day!

The New York state legislature has passed an amended family law (Senate Bill S9316) that supplants the supposedly discriminatory terms “mother” and “father” with the expressions “gestating parent” and “non-gestating parent.” So woke wins another battle, although most people would regard the changes as ridiculous.

Governor Hochul has not said whether she will sign the bill, though a staffer says the bill only addresses “technical issues related to surrogacy and parentage” and that the bill will be reviewed.

Meanwhile, the nation as a whole will observe Father’s Day on June 21 at a time when more and more social commentators — male and female — are highlighting the signal importance of having responsible and caring fathers in the daily lives of their children. It turns out that many of today’s worst pathologies trace to failure of father-bonding with offspring.

Our Discovery Institute Senior Fellow George Gilder has written extensively on this topic in The Naked Nomads and Men and Marriage. The latter especially still makes a thoughtful gift this wedding season!
